Safety glass is designed to protect people’s health and integrity in case of accidents. The general idea is that once broken, it minimizes risks to users who come into contact with the glass.
Safety levels refer to the behavior upon impact, presumed to be human impact. There are generally two internationally used reference levels: the lower level corresponds to accidental low-energy impacts, and the second to high-energy impacts, similar to a person colliding with unseen glass. Vandalism protection is a different property; however, generally, all glass with vandalism protection is safety glass.
In practically all Western countries, safety glass is mandatory in high-traffic areas, doors, adjacent to doors, low windows, patio doors, in school buildings, and hospitals.
Safety glass is tested under international standards in accredited laboratories and has quality assurance seals, supporting its performance in breakage situations and generating confidence in responsible and careful manufacturing.
